Instead of typing out long daily bullet-points, I'm just gonna give the run down for each kiddo
QL
- We're reading Absolutely Lucy, which just introduced the character Candy. QL read all of the previous chapters herself, and I'm so glad I got in on this one, because the idea of someone named candy gives my girl the giggles!
- we worked on /ar/ for phonics, and the color word /red/
- For math we're working on word problems, and deciding whether to add or take away. We're also working on ordinal numbers.
IW
- He's just cruising along in Singpore 1A math. I'm just having him do an exercise or 2 a day until we get to a point of new information.
- One day he read to me from Hurricanes and Twisters. It was originally published in 1954 and the first story is about hurricane Hazel, which destroyed most of it's path. Not light reading. For his next time reading we switched back to our Magic Treehouse book..... the one on the moon.
- For copywork he chose a stanza from our poem. I do believe he'll be ready for dictation soon.....
Together
- The pilgrim's aren't doing too well in Plymouth. They built the common house, then started on the village, but half of them died that first winter. IW wondered why they would write such a sad chapter. Narrations were given and lemon heads were eaten.
- We started our Day 3 of Creation unit. The dry land has been separated from the seas. We've talked about soil and the 3 layers of the earth. Then, upon request, we watched an encore of the water cycle YouTube video. It's that good. Our second day of science had us checking out rocks. This was a big hit! A while back I had the kids go find as many different kinds of rocks as they could in our backyard. Then I went to a parent/teacher store and got a rock kit. We compared/contrasted our rocks to those in the kit and decided if our rocks are fire rocks (igneous), settled rocks (sedimentary), or changed rocks (metamorphosis). The kids really liked this. Em even got in on the action!
- We started reading a poem every morning. This week we have read Daybreak by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow each morning. We learned what chanticleer means. (Rooster). We're having fun with this! Each of the kids took a turn this week reading the poem, and both did an excellent job reading with cadence, which made my super-nerdy, literature-loving heart swoon.
- We watched the 2 hour premier of Frozen Planet on the Discovery Channel. It's a documentary about the poles, and it's AWESOME. It has 4 more one-hour episodes in the coming month, and we plan to DVR all of them.
- We FINALLY did our first lesson from Artistic Pursuits!!!! This is worth shouting about. I can't believe it took me so long to finally pull it out. We all LOVED it.
- After a break, we are back to reading Farmer Boy. Mr. Corse just licked those Hardscrabble boys, and Almanzo had a birthday.
- We took our puppy, Buddy, to the vet and learned about bones, muscles, and the definition of "sprain". *sigh*
